Years ago, I heard a sermon from Bishop T.D. Jakes. He broke down Genesis 22:5 into time management tips.
I understood what he said. However, it wasn’t until recently that I GOT IT.
The Kings James Version of Genesis 22:5 states:
And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.
Bishop Jakes said that you need to understand that you can’t take everyone with you to the top. But when you get to where you need to be, then you can go back.
There was a time when I wanted to take all my team members with me. So much so, I even gave them a nick name, “Team Bring It.”
If you worked with me, then you were going to be on Team Bring It.
But I’ve come to realize not everyone wants to be on the team. Most just want to work, go home, and watch the fake news.
So I decided when I created another version of Team Bring It. It was going to be only for those who were willing to put in the hours to become the best.
In a 2010 interview, Elon Musk advised entrepreneurs to be “extremely tenacious and then just work like hell. You just have to put in 80 to 100 hour weeks every week.”
He explained, “If other people are putting in 40-hour workweeks and you’re putting in 100-hour work weeks, then even if you’re doing the same thing … You will achieve in four months what it takes them a year to achieve.”
I believe that’s great advice. But think about how many times do you want to be married?
So here’s my time management tips for startup entrepreneurs and team-focused executives:
- Put on headphones or shut your door and work in time block chunks (15, 25, or 50 minutes).
- Like Warren Buffet has Charlie Munger, and Oprah Winfrey has Gayle King, be comfortable with having one partner who’ll go up the mountain with you.
